Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was hailed as a hero after he tackled and restrained a man who tried to break into his Bromley mansion.

According to reports by the Daily Mail, the incident occurred while Ferdinand’s pregnant wife and children were at home.

The CCTV footage showed the suspect attempting to break through the patio doors of the mansion the night before. It is believed that he stayed in the garden overnight before being caught and subdued by Ferdinand.

The Met Police released a statement to MailOnline, stating that they were called early on Friday morning and that only one person was involved. They found a 70-year-old man detained by a private security guard in Farnborough, who had been found in the garden of Ferdinand’s residential property.

The man was subsequently dealt with by means of a community resolution for “Being on Enclosed Premises for an Unlawful Purpose,” an offense under the Vagrancy Act. He was not arrested.

Ferdinand’s quick thinking and bravery has to be commended. Frequent break-ins at footballers’ houses have become a growing concern in recent years. With high-profile players living in luxury homes, they can become easy targets for burglars.

Incidents like the these serve as a reminder that even with security measures in place, these crimes can still occur.

The increasing frequency of these break-ins highlights the need for greater protection for footballers and their families, as well as the need for stronger punishments for the perpetrators.
